Thor: The Dark World
MMM Score 7.2

The movie begins with Thor and his warrior companions battling to bring peace to the nine realms. Having all but won the quest the titular character longs to be with Jane Foster. Chris Hemsworth has settled into the role of Thor and is a completely different character from his first outing as a 'boy with a hammer'. While the character is more serious, so is the movie. Well.... as serious as you can be when you're telling a story about a god who can fly faster than the speed of light.Nevertheless the clue is in the name and Thor 2 is very dark.

The main villain is a character known as Malekith played by Christopher Eccleston. Malekiths motivations are totally one dimensional (standard destroy the world just for fun type stuff). Malekith is trying to get his hands on a substance known as the Ether which conveniently finds itself inside Jane Foster when the nine realms realities begin to line up and colide. Eccleston is a fine actor but is not tested here at all. It does feel like a film lacking direction and can often feel somewhat convoluted, by the end of the film we are left wondering what the hell happened.

The first hour of the film is the opposite of the first movie and has almost no funny moments. Oddly, the comedy picks up after Frigga (Thors mother) is killed by Malekith. Enter Erik Selvig - he is often found without trousers and has been driven mad by having Loki playing around in his head in Avengers Assemble. This leads to possibly Stan Lee's most comedic cameo when he asks for his shoe back after a lecture given by Selvig in a mental institute.

Once again the MCU show that the best villain and arguably the best character in the franchise is Loki. Tom Hiddlestones performance redeems this film and the most interesting scenes are when Loki is locked in a cell paying for his crimes on Earth. You never quite know if Loki is good or evil, I don't think he is either and is the grey area somewhere in between. For me, this is what makes a character great, not knowing what they will do next.

Thor: The Dark World is wonderful to watch. The effects are incredible in this film and Alan Taylor really left a Game of Thrones type stamp on it. Some have said all style and no substance which I think is unfair. There is substance, just not much of it which stems from the confusing plot line.

This film has taken a bashing and fans are hoping for redemption with the upcoming Thor: Ragnorak but I disagree. I was entertained by this movie. Not moved or captivated but it is a comic book movie after all and can we really expect Iron Man quality at all times? It is definately better than Hulk and is on par with Iron Man 2. Chris Hemsworth is always good in the role but once again Tom Hiddleston steals the show perfectly conveying seething anger but yet . Anthony Hopkins is a veteran and really owns every scene he is in, pity he is most likely dead having met his demise by the hands of Loki but this is pure speculation and I for one cannot wait to see what the MCU has in store for Thor and Loki especially how the movie concluded with Loki posing as Odin and claiming his seat on the throne.
