Carol Danvers is Captain Marvel, one of the Avengers and one of the worlds greatest Super Heroes. After meeting a Kree hero called Captain Mar-Vell Danvers genetic structure is altered making her a human/kree hybrid. Carol took the codename Ms Marvel until Captain America suggested Danvers take on the mantle Captain Marvel to honour the memory of the now deceased origional Kree hero Mar-Vell.
